Nothing is more important than the safety of your children and our staff.
Illness and COVID-19
SCNS guidelines for COVID-19 and other infectious illnesses follow the most current guidelines and recommendations provided by the Ministry of Health. Children, staff and visitors are encouraged to self-screen for symptoms of COVID‑19 or other infectious illnesses every day before attending Sunnylea. A child needs to be well to participate actively in the program. If you child is unwell, please keep them at home. If you are unsure, consult a physician or nurse. This is important not only for the health of your child, but also for other children within our care. All possible measures will be taken to protect the health of children in our care and to maintain privacy and confidentiality.
Cleanliness and Hand Washing
SCNS has a detailed Sanitary Practices Policy, outlined in the SCNS Policies and Procedures Document which is distributed to all parents/guardians. We focus on teaching personal hygiene routines and cleaning and disinfecting rooms, toys, and equipment frequently. Personal hygiene has always been a focus and priority at SCNS. We wash our hands many times a day including:
- When students and staff arrive at the center
- After using the washroom
- Before and after eating
- Before and after sensory activities
- After activities off premises
- Any time hands are visibly soiled
Child Supervision
Sunnylea Co-operative Nursery School stands firmly on the vision that all children enrolled in the school will be effectively supervised at all times. SCNS prides itself on being a warm and nurturing school where we strive to:
- Ensure all teachers and parents/guardians promote a positive and supportive approach with all children and other adults.
- Direct positive attention to all children, model positive communication skills, display empathy, and use teachable moments to develop positive social behaviours and build confidence.
- Foster self-esteem in all interactions with the children. Role-model how to accomplish tasks, assist children to process their own emotions and those of others, and provide encouragement on how tasks are completed.
- Manage behaviour through use of developmentally appropriate and individually tailored strategies. Teachers will consistently role model positive behaviour strategies, encourage problem solving, anticipate challenges where possible, and redirect as needed.
