About our school:
Sunnylea Co-operative Nursery School (SCNS) is a well-established nursery school founded in 1984 with the aim to create a positive foundation for a child’s first educational experience. The nursery school offers a full-time and part-time program for 15 children aged 2 to 3 years old from September to June on a yearly basis. The nursery school is a non-profit located in Etobicoke, owned and managed by its members, who are the families of the children enrolled in the school each year. The members work very closely with the school’s teachers, who are warm, caring, and highly committed in and out of the classroom.
Seeking a self-employed contractor:
Our nursery school is seeking a self-employed individual (contractor) who will engage in business relationship with the school for Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) services (i.e. will carry out such services as a person in business on their own account). These services include effectively educate, stimulate, and care for the children in the classroom environment and communicate with our team of teachers and families of the school. The contractor must be highly committed, caring and self-motivated.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The self-employed contractor will work under the direction of the Supervisor Teacher and with a team of two teachers in the classroom in order to meet Ministry of Education requirements given the nature of the service provided. The contractor should independently be able to:
- Use all reasonable teaching skills, knowledge and experience to ensure that the written philosophy and objectives of the school are met, and to ensure that a reasonable and professional standard of early childhood education is carried out.
- Engage meaningfully with the children and promote the development of social and emotional awareness, communication and literacy, cognition and physical development skills within the children.
- Model good behaviours and positive adult/child relationships.
- Tend to children’s basic needs by feeding, dressing, and toileting/diapering, as well as be responsible for cleaning toys and serving dishes. Overall, ensure that the classroom remains safe and conducive to learning at all times.
- Be familiar and knowledgeable about the requirements of the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (Ontario).
- Maintain open and honest lines of communication and a positive, co-operative environment with the Supervisor Teacher, other teacher(s), Board of Directors, families and children.
- Maintain proper confidentiality of school records and information pertaining to the parents and children.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be required in providing the programs in the manner and style in favour since the inception of the school.
Service requirements:
The contractor must meet the following requirements prior to providing services at our school:
- Valid First Aid + CPR-C & AED
- Up-to-date Immunizations, T.B. test, and medical certification
- Current Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check for employment (no more
than 6 months old from the date it is provided)
If the contractor is unable to carry out the services personally for one or more days, they can hire another party or substitute to provide the ECA services for our school and pay the costs for the substitute. This other party or substitute must meet all the requirements listed above prior to providing services at our school.
Other qualities:
- A passion for early childhood development and/or prior experience with toddler and
preschool aged children. - Fluency in English with excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
and problem-solving skills. - Good team player and warm, supportive attitude.
- Highly organized, with a strong attention to detail.
Service details:
- The contractor is to provide ECA specific services from January 2025 to June 2025, Monday through Friday from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM (1.5 hours per day)
- The school is closed on all statutory holidays, during a one-week period at Mid- Winter (March) Break, and any other dates that the contract staff would be notified in advance, if applicable. However, the school is open for all TDSB professional
activities (PA) days
Service pricing:
- Starting at $17.20 / hour. Contractor would be responsible to invoice the school for the hours worked, once those hours are approved by the Supervisor Teacher
- Expenses incurred by the contractor are not covered
- Benefits are not offered
